01

Give them a realistic role

Espadrilles can be a useful alternative to sandals when you want a closed toe with a relaxed summer feel. Think lunches, a holiday evening or a short local outing, depending on the pair and your comfort. QWD would not make them the only shoes in a travel bag. Your plans may include rain, extensive walking or a restaurant where another shoe works better, even if the espadrilles look right with the clothes.

02

Look underneath as well as on top

Permanent Style’s guide explains espadrilles as a distinct casual shoe rather than a cheap substitute for a loafer. Construction varies, and its workshop report shows different insole and outsole choices. Check how much rubber covers the bottom, how the upper joins the sole and what touches your foot. A similar-looking canvas upper can sit on quite different foundations. You need to assess the actual pair rather than buy on colour alone. Choose what works for you

QWD suggestions to help with the decision; check the actual garment or shoes.

04

Fit should not depend on enduring pain

Try both shoes and walk on a clean surface. Your toes need room, and your heel should stay secure without your foot being squeezed. Follow the maker’s size guidance but do not assume all espadrilles require sizing down. If trying discreet socks, use them during the fitting. A shoe that slides around or rubs immediately needs another size or shape, not a promise that every uncomfortable detail will disappear.

05

Keep trousers relaxed

QWD would try navy canvas espadrilles with washed blue jeans and an ecru camp-collar shirt. With linen trousers, choose a hem that does not drag beneath the heel. Stone shorts and a plain blue shirt are another simple option. A sharply formal suit is a less straightforward setting for this shoe. For an event, check the invitation and venue; a summer date does not automatically mean very casual footwear is welcome.

06

Treat wet ground as a separate decision

Castañer advises keeping its jute espadrilles away from rain and wet ground and says not to immerse them or put them in a washing machine. A rubber underside does not mean every part of the shoe is protected. Follow the instructions for your pair. If the forecast or route makes wet ground likely, choose another shoe for that day rather than rely on the casual summer look as evidence of weather suitability. (Castañer — Maintenance and Care)

07

Choose comfort over the holiday image

Consider the pavement, distance and support you normally need. A short fitting cannot establish all-day comfort, so keep early outings manageable and reassess. Look for loose stitching and uneven wear after use. Let the shoes dry as directed before storing them. If your ordinary sneakers are the better choice for a day of sightseeing, wear those; espadrilles can still have a useful place at dinner or on a quieter afternoon.
