Length is a practical and visual decision. Mid-thigh is mobile and casual; around the knee adds protection and a stronger line. Either needs to cover the real layers beneath it and hang evenly from the side.

Cover the jacketTry the coat over the thickest real layer and make sure no jacket hem appears.

Balance the hemThe front and back should look level, or the front may sit very slightly lower depending on the cut.
