01
Pack for the actual weekend
Write down the activities: travelling, walking, dinner and perhaps a gallery or lunch. Then check the forecast and any venue dress expectations. This example assumes a casual two-night city break in mild weather, not a wedding, hiking trip or business conference. MR PORTER’s vacation guide usefully separates clothes by activity, although its optional extras can make a much larger bag. QWD’s approach here is to cover known plans first and add only a clear need. (MR PORTER — Dress Code: What To Wear On Vacation (2 June 2023))
02
Choose one travelling outfit
Wear straight dark jeans or navy trousers, a comfortable tee, a fine knit and your main walking shoes. Add the coat you need for the destination. This is part of the total clothing count, not an extra outfit outside the list. Choose shoes you already know you can walk in. A weekend trip is a poor moment to discover that a new pair feels good for ten minutes but uncomfortable for the rest of the day.

AT A GLANCE
The three-day clothing plan
QWD example for two nights in mild weather. Counts include the clothes worn while travelling.
| Item | Total | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Bottoms | 2 | Dark jeans and stone chinos |
| Tops | 3 | White tee, blue shirt, navy polo |
| Knit | 1 | Fine navy or grey crewneck |
| Outer layer | 1 | Coat appropriate for the forecast |
| Shoes | 1–2 pairs | Walking pair; optional dinner pair |
| Underwear and socks | Fresh set each day | Add a spare as needed |
| Other essentials | As needed | Sleepwear, toiletries, medicines, chargers, activity kit |
04
Add pieces that make different outfits
Pack stone chinos, a blue shirt and a navy polo if you are wearing dark jeans and a white tee. Those three tops can work with either bottom. A navy or grey knit gives you a cool-evening layer without introducing another colour problem. This is a QWD example, not a compulsory capsule. Swap equivalent pieces you already own. The useful test is whether each packed garment makes an outfit with something else in the bag.
05
Be deliberate about the second shoes
A pair of loafers can change the same trousers from sightseeing to dinner, but only pack them if you will wear them. If your main shoes suit every plan, save the space. If the trip includes exercise, swimming or a formal event, add the required kit and revise the bag size. Do not pretend the base list covers activities it was not designed for. Also keep dirty soles separated from clothing and use a protective case for sunglasses.
06
Count the less glamorous essentials
Bring underwear and socks for each day, a spare if useful, sleepwear, toiletries, medicines and chargers. Add a hat and the sun protection appropriate for your plans. Check your actual airline’s baggage allowance if flying; this clothing example is not a guarantee that every packed bag meets it. Leave room for worn laundry. A clear, complete essentials check is more valuable than adding a fourth shirt because the bag still has a little space.
07
Test the bag before leaving
Lay out a daytime and evening outfit, then close and carry the packed bag. Remove the items that have no specific use. Unpack clothes on arrival where space permits, and follow their labels if you need to remove creases. The aim is not to win a packing contest. It is to arrive with comfortable, appealing outfits and spend the weekend enjoying your plans rather than wishing you had packed one useful layer instead of three spare tops.
