01

Find the line from shoulder to shoe

Stand back from the mirror and stop inspecting individual garments. Look for the route the eye follows from the open jacket or overshirt through the trouser and into the shoe.

02

Keep the waist deliberate

A full tuck reveals the trouser rise and lengthens the visible leg. An untucked top can still work when its hem is controlled and the layer above creates a stronger vertical opening.

03

Protect the trouser line

Pulling at the hip, collapsing knees and excess break each interrupt the line. The trouser needs room to fall, then a hem set for the exact shoe you intend to wear.

04

Match shoe volume to the opening

A wider hem needs a shoe with enough sole and upper to receive it. A very narrow shoe beneath a broad trouser can make the fabric look longer and heavier than it is.

05

Fix one interruption at a time

Start with the largest break in the line: jacket length, top hem, trouser fit or shoe volume. Correct that before buying another piece. One small proportion change can settle the entire outfit.
