Breathable second-hand clothes with structure

Reader’s budget: MX$400 per piece

I’m a student with a fuller, curvier figure and mostly thrift. How can I spot lightweight fabrics that keep their shape without clinging or creasing immediately?

An anonymous reader question, edited for length. Answer by Jason Howard · 17 September 2026.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Look for room through the fullest parts of your body and a light fabric with enough substance to hang freely. A fibre label is a starting point, not a guarantee of coolness, structure or crease resistance.

01

Check the whole garment

Start with unlined shirts and trousers in cotton, linen or blends that feel comfortable to you. Very thin jersey may cling; a light woven fabric may stand away more readily. Hold it to light for worn areas and transparency. Check the lining too: it can change how an otherwise light garment wears.

02

Fit the fullest area first

For a shirt, check the chest, upper arms and hips while buttoned. For trousers, check the seat and thighs while sitting. A waistband that is slightly roomy may be easier to assess for adjustment than fabric that pulls across the hips. Choose your preferred waist position, not one prescribed for your body shape.

03

Accept texture, reject damage

Gently scrunch and release the cloth to see its immediate response. Linen will crease; a blend may behave differently, but no label promises a wrinkle-free day. Inspect seams, thinning inner thighs, stressed buttons and stretched pockets. Clean collars and a neat hem can provide structure without a stiff or close-fitting garment.

Check before buying.

  1. Sit, reach and walk before buying whenever possible.
  2. Check opacity in bright light and look for fabric pulling between buttons.
  3. Avoid a piece that only feels comfortable when standing still.

YOUR BUDGET / MX$400 per piece

Spend on the fit that matters.

Use MX$400 as the total for the piece, including cleaning or a small repair. A simple button replacement may be worthwhile; substantial reshaping or badly worn cloth is unlikely to serve a tight budget. Check whether the seller accepts returns before taking a chance on fit.
