01

Fit it for movement, not bagginess

Linen should have room through the chest and back so the cloth can move away from the body, but the shoulder and collar still need definition. Reach forward and raise your arms; the placket should not pull and the hem should remain controlled. A relaxed cut is useful in heat, while excessive length and dropped shoulders can make the shirt look borrowed.

One shirt, four levels of formality.

The hem, cloth weight and collar determine whether the actual shirt can perform each role.

03Begin with pale blue, white or ecru

Pale blue is the most forgiving because it works with stone, navy, charcoal, olive and denim. White feels sharper but can become transparent, so check it in daylight. Ecru is softer with brown and olive. Strong colour can be excellent, but a first linen shirt earns more wears when it connects to trousers you already own.

04Wear it untucked for an easy daytime outfit

Choose a shirt whose hem ends around mid-fly and pair it with straight chinos, dark jeans, drawstring trousers or tailored shorts. Roll the sleeves once or twice, not into a tight bundle. Minimal sneakers, suede loafers or restrained sandals can finish the outfit. Keep the T-shirt underneath invisible unless the shirt is intentionally worn open.

05Tuck it for work or dinner

A full tuck into mid-rise tailored trousers creates a clearer waist and lets linen behave like relaxed shirting rather than beachwear. Add dark-brown loafers and an unstructured navy jacket when needed. Smooth the fabric but do not chase perfect flatness; a few soft wrinkles are part of the material. Make sure the shirt tail is long enough to stay in place.

06Use it as a lightweight overshirt

A slightly heavier linen shirt can sit open over a white or ecru T-shirt with navy trousers or denim. The two layers need enough contrast to remain distinct, and the outer shirt should not cling through the back. This is especially useful from late afternoon into evening, when temperature changes but a jacket feels too formal.

07Pair the texture deliberately

Linen has a dry, irregular surface, so it works naturally with suede, matte leather, washed cotton and softly tailored wool. Avoid combining it with several loud summer signals at once—bright print, rope belt, distressed shorts and espadrilles can become a costume. One relaxed texture is enough to change the atmosphere of a quiet wardrobe.

08Care without removing its character

Follow the care label, wash gently when appropriate and reshape the collar and seams while damp. Air drying reduces unnecessary stress. Steam or iron when the setting calls for polish, but accept light creasing during wear. Deep set wrinkles, twisted seams and a collapsed collar are maintenance issues; natural movement is not a defect.
