Which trouser alterations should you budget for?

Reader’s budget: C$300 per item

I’m petite with a shorter torso and buy online from a smaller Canadian city. Which alterations should I plan for so foundational trousers do not overwhelm me?

An anonymous reader question, edited for length. Answer by Jason Howard · 17 September 2026.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Buy the rise, seat and thigh room as close to right as possible. Budget first for a hem; consider a small waist adjustment or gentle taper only after a tailor has assessed the whole fit.

01

Choose the waist position deliberately

A very high rise is not automatically the right answer for a petite frame. Try a comfortable mid-rise and a higher rise with your usual shirt, both tucked and untucked. Choose the position that leaves a balance you enjoy between torso and legs. Compare the front rise and thigh measurements with trousers you already like.

02

Ask for three separate quotes

Ask a local tailor to price hemming, waist adjustment and leg tapering separately. Mention the cloth, lining and any turn-ups. Hemming is the first task to assess; narrowing the leg is optional, not a default requirement. Avoid paying to taper away the room that lets you sit comfortably.

03

Know when to return them

A deep sag below the seat, an uncomfortable crotch or persistent twisting through the leg is a reason to try another pattern. Changing the rise or reshaping the seat can be more involved than a routine hem. Have the fitting in the shoes you will wear and pin the proposed length before cutting.

Check before buying.

  1. Sit fully and check the waistband does not dig in.
  2. Check the side and back as well as the front.
  3. Walk after pinning: fabric should fall back into place instead of catching at the calf.

YOUR BUDGET / C$300 per item

Spend on the fit that matters.

As a planning example, reserve C$60 of the C$300 ceiling until you have a quote; this is a buffer, not a Canadian tailoring price estimate. Garment cost, tax, delivery and alterations must fit the total. Return the trousers if the required work exceeds it.
