01

THREE SEPARATE DECISIONS

Read the specification in three lines.

A single pair can occupy one option in each row. None of these labels replaces a fit check.

02

Raw and washed answer one question

Raw denim is sold without the usual wash treatment; washed denim has already received a wash or finishing process. Levi’s separates raw denim from selvedge construction in its guidance. Ask what the maker means by raw, whether the cloth has been preshrunk, and which care routine the sizing advice assumes. Do not apply one maker’s shrinkage instructions to another pair.

03

Rigid and stretch answer another

Read the composition and the product’s explanation of stretch. Rigid denim can still change with wear, but it is not the same as a fabric designed with added stretch. When trying either, sit, step up and bend your knees. Do not buy painful restriction on the promise that the jeans will eventually become comfortable.

04

Selvedge is an edge, not a verdict

Selvedge identifies a self-finished fabric edge associated with shuttle-loom weaving. It can be a pleasing construction detail, but it does not tell you that the rise, pockets, cloth weight or cut will suit you. Raw jeans need not be selvedge, and selvedge jeans can be washed or include stretch. Judge the actual pair rather than paying for the word alone.

05

Get a specific answer about shrinkage

Ask whether the exact jeans are preshrunk and how the recommended wash affects waist and length. Levi’s treats Shrink-to-Fit jeans separately from its preshrunk styles and ties its sizing advice to intended care. That is why a generic instruction to size up or down is unsafe shopping advice. Follow the exact model’s guidance before hemming or removing return tags.

06

Try them with your real shoes and layers

Choose the waistband position first, then check room through the seat and thigh. Put on the shoes you will wear most. A heavy fold at the ankle may need a length adjustment, but a tight upper leg will not be fixed by shortening the hem. For the full fit sequence use QWD’s existing jeans guide.

07

Choose the routine you will actually maintain

If you prefer a familiar feel and simpler sizing, begin by considering a washed pair with clear care instructions. If you enjoy how unworn denim develops, choose a raw pair with well-explained fit and shrinkage guidance. Neither choice needs to become a test of authenticity. Confirm cleaning instructions, dye-transfer warnings and return conditions before buying.
