A trouser succeeds through the rise, seat and line to the shoe—not the waist number alone. 01 · FIT

  1. RiseThe waistband should sit where the trouser was designed to sit without being dragged lower. A higher rise can lengthen the leg line and give pleats room to fall.
  2. SeatThere should be no horizontal pulling, sagging or pocket flare. Sit, climb a stair and put your hands in the pockets before keeping them.
  3. ThighPleats and creases need room to hang straight. If the crease bends around the thigh, try a fuller cut rather than simply sizing up.
  4. HemJudge the trouser with the shoes you will wear. Unfinished and extra-long hems need alteration cost and timing included in the decision.

02 · QUALITY

  1. ClothNamed mills, wool source, fibre content and weight are useful evidence. Super numbers describe fibre fineness, not automatic durability.
  2. WaistbandA constructed waistband, side adjusters or an after-dinner split can improve comfort and help the trouser hold its line.
  3. InsideLook for clean seam finishing, sensible lining and enough inlay for alteration. A beautiful exterior can hide minimal construction.
  4. UseMatte or softly textured charcoal separates more easily than shiny suit cloth. Choose the formality level that matches your real shoes and jackets.
