An overshirt should work open over a T-shirt and button without pulling. QWD checked current Australian prices, stock signals, fabric and construction information; it has not physically tested these six garments.

01 · FIT

ShoulderThe seam should sit close to the end of your shoulder without collapsing down the arm. A deliberate drop shoulder needs enough body room to look intentional.
LayerTry it over the heaviest layer you expect to wear. The buttons should close cleanly and the armhole should not bite when you reach forward.
LengthMost overshirts finish around the upper-to-mid fly. Short bomber-like cuts may stop higher; longer workshirt cuts can reach the lower hip, provided the hem does not hide the trouser rise or bunch above the seat.
SleeveThe cuff should finish at the wrist and stay out of your hand. Check whether the button position can be adjusted cleanly.

ClothLook for fabric weight, fibre and finish—not simply the word premium. Dense Oxford, twill, corduroy and broken twill each create a different line.
PocketsChest and hand pockets should lie flat when empty and remain usable without distorting the front.
HardwareButtons, snaps and zips should operate cleanly and be attached without loose threads or puckering.
PurposeAn unlined cotton overshirt is a layering piece, not rainwear. Pay extra only for fabric, construction or fit you can actually use.
