What shoes should men wear with jeans?

White, off-white, navy or brown leather sneakers work with most straight and tapered jeans. Keep the profile low to medium, the branding quiet and the sole clean. A technical running shoe can work with relaxed denim, but its mesh, colour and sole volume turn the outfit in a sportier direction. Make that choice deliberately.

Penny or tassel loafers look strongest with dark straight or tapered denim and little excess fabric at the ankle. A slim loafer suits a controlled opening; a heavier loafer balances a fuller leg. Use tonal socks for a continuous line or a deliberate textured contrast. Bare ankles are an option in warm casual settings, not a requirement.

Choose suede, grain leather or a matte finish rather than a highly polished office shoe. A rounded plain-toe or split-toe Derby gives dark jeans structure without pretending they are suit trousers. Add an Oxford shirt, knit polo or soft jacket and keep the jeans free from whiskering, torn details and heavy stacking.

Chelsea boots suit narrow-to-straight openings that pass cleanly over the shaft. Desert and chukka boots are softer and forgiving with casual denim. Heavier service boots need straighter or fuller jeans and a top half with enough texture—an overshirt, field jacket or substantial knit—to balance their visual weight.

Dark indigo works with white, black, dark brown, tobacco and burgundy shoes. Mid-blue denim is particularly good with brown suede, off-white sneakers and black boots. Black jeans support black, charcoal, dark brown and restrained white. The best colour usually repeats or quietly relates to something above the waist.

A good pairing can fail because the jean is too long or the opening catches on the shoe. Test the intended jeans and footwear together, then walk and sit.
